About Castle Khandela |
A warm welcome awaits you at Castle Khandela, the ancestral home of Rajah Raisal Singh II and his wife Rani Sunila Raisal. The castle, which is situated in the heart of the
small town of Khandela, nestled amongst the Aravali Hills and the family who have resided there for 18 generations, have been regarded with affection and respect by the townspeople, for over 700 years.
It is thought that construction of the castle, using local sand stone, began in about 1780, after the ruler of the Shekhawat clan, the first Raja Raisal Darbari, conquered the ruler of the clan of
Nirwan, in a fierce battle which resulted in the destruction of the fort that was at the top of the nearby hill.
After winding your way through the narrow streets of the ancient town, you enter the main courtyard through heavy wooden gates to find yourself surrounded by traditional Rajasthani architecture,
with arched doorways and windows, topped with burj, curved decorative features common to the region.
Mr Singh is an avid historian and his collections, which are displayed around the rooms and public areas, range from coins dating from 500 BC, to writing implements and walking sticks. He
has a fine collection of old swords and daggers. He is a fascinating raconteur and loves to recount stories from his family history over a cup of chai!
The bedrooms on the ground floor open out onto a shady courtyard, the perfect place to relax with tea after a day’s sightseeing, filled with an interesting bonsai collection and terracotta
artefacts. On the first floor, the bedrooms open onto the terraces which extend around all four sides, affording views across the village rooftops towards the distant hills. A great spot for
evening drinks and star-gazing.
The small town of Khandela is a truly peaceful place to explore, untouched by the modern world, with just the sounds of bleating goats and birdsong to accompany you. The langurs stealing food in
the vegetable market; the aromatic spice market; the small shops; and the traditional craftsmen, such as wood turners, cobblers, potters and blacksmiths, remain unchanged. In fact, it is claimed
that there has been a settlement on this site for 5000 years, dating back to the Mahabarat period, when it was a pilgrimage site for Hindus.
